20 new small works by highly awarded Maclean based artist, Frances Belle Parker. A proud Yaegl woman, painter and installation artist, Frances Bele Parker first came to prominence as the winner of the Blake Prize in 2000, making her the youngest ever winner at the age of eighteen, and the first Indigenous recipient in the prize’s history.

Frances is deeply inspired by the lands and stories of the Yaegl people, in particular Ulgundahi Island in the Clarence River, where her mother grew up. In fact, the island inspired Frances’ most recent solo show Identifying Ulgundahi held at CoFA in Sydney in 2008 and The Dreaming Festival at Wooford in Queensland in 2009.

The works in her new show, My River, are inspired by the Clarence River (Beiirrinba), which Frances says, has always played a huge part in her art making practice, for as long as she can remember.
Works included in the show include acrylics on paper and linen, as well as mixed media pieces. Sales from the exhibition will assist Frances during her upcoming residency in China later in 2010. Each work is priced at less than $250.

3 Rivers is open 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Friday.

Lines of Sight and Mind is an exhibition of mixed media and painting by local artists Carl Smith and Cedar Henderson. Cedar and Carl studied together at Southern Cross University. Now they are bringing their complementing styles of work to be tasted together in an exhibition duo. Carl currently works across drawing and painting. Figurative and psychological landscapes are words Carl uses to define his work.........looking at the human body or other figurative forms, often genderless and ageless as a landscape in a blur between reality and imagination. These are works that Carl would rather let speak on their own in whichever way they will. Cedar explores storytelling traditions and the multiple histories and mythologies that surround and inform archetypal narratives in the form of myth and fairytales. Storytelling has become Cedar's passion and fuel for her practice. Her work has developed from a process of sifting through cultural overlays, mapping the complexities of multiple voices and shifting meanings within the stories. Your invited to the opening night for Lines of Sight and Mind on Friday July 9 from 5:30pm the exhibition continues for the month of July.

Every week somewhere in Australia news headlines proclaim yet another tragedy of young lives lost in a car wreck. Communities are shocked, families torn apart, questions are asked that can not be answered. People call for changes to the laws, politicians duck for cover, fellow students set up roadside shrines and parents are left with memories.

Set a month after a crash, Engine is the story of "Grumpop" who lost a grandson and Natasha who lost a brother and how they deal with their grief and try to get on with the future. Natasha wants to remember Stevie by finishing the project car he was working on before the crash. Grumpop is a retired mechanic and he could help but he just wants to put it all behind him.

Two actors play all the characters: counsellors, driving instructors, parents, ghosts and survivors. However, joining them at every performance are students from local high schools who will devise and perform key scenes. Over the year NORPA will work with students and teachers to build these unique and authentic contributions. While the actors' text remains constant, the input from these young people means that every performance will be nuanced and reflect their own real-life experiences.

Engine is a story of young people and cars; of fixing what's broken and celebrating life. Highly theatrical, it's a funny and moving roller-coaster ride that will break your heart and mend it. Ticket Prices: Adult, $37.00. Concession, $30.00. Under 18, $16.50. 10 Students + 1 Teacher (Free), $140.00. Additional School Students, $14.00.

Orsino is head over heels with Olivia, but she's too busy mourning her dead brother to notice. Meanwhile, her steward is trying to run a strict household while grappling with sexual frustration, and her boozy old uncle is chasing the maid and generally causing trouble. Into this mayhem enter the twins - one male, one female - equally lovable but a little too hard to tell apart...

In Lee Lewis' retelling of the play, Viola has lost her twin brother Sebastian following a natural disaster but can't search for him until morning. How will she and her fellow survivors get through the night? They'll put on a show! Using odds and ends they find around the building along with their own salvaged treasures, the characters "play" Twelfth Night, finding comfort in each other and in the story's enduring sense of hope. This new production brings a surprising twist and a little bit of magic to Shakespeare's much-loved comedy of mistaken identity, deception and desire.Ticket Prices: Adult, $47.00. Concession, $38.00. Under 18, $21.00. 10 Students + 1 Teacher (Free), $140.00. Additional School Students, $14.00.

Exhibiton by Kristine Uebergang: I created this work to enjoy the deck of cards as icons of layered meaning. Not only to commemorate history but to acknowledge the patterns of allegorical behaviour that are recreated each time the deck falls. Just as the ‘position that a card falls in’ implies the presence of an archetype or fated pattern of events, so too have I marvelled at the way the cards have fallen in my life.‘Among Other Things’ are the bits and pieces of works I have only now managed to complete…given the way the cards fell recently, providing me time and space. Splendid and NORPA are proud to present two free masterclasses for committed artists in the Northern Rivers region, hosted by two senior artists from the 2010 Splendid Arts Lab, investigating contemporary theatre practice and multi-art form collaboration, physical performance in relation to space and site specific installation for performance, where visual arts define the theatre space. Visual artists, performers, sound and new media artists are encouraged to attend. This is an open workshop but you must register. Spaces are limited to a maximum of 15 participants.

Masterclass 1, Site Specific Design with Jeff Khan 9am to 1pm

How does ‘the space’ inform ‘the context’ for performance and how do the visual arts connect with contemporary theatre making? This master class will focus on how artists use alternative spaces and then create work responding to that environment. This workshop will explore NORPA’s performance spaces and is aimed at more experienced artists who want to integrate their skills into the performance arena.
Jeff Khan is a curator and writer, and Artistic Director of Next Wave. For the 2008 festival, Khan oversaw the development and delivery of a multidisciplinary program, which included 61 projects and nearly 400 artists from diverse artforms and backgrounds, from around Australia and abroad.

Masterclass 2,
Effective Collaboration, with Paul Gazzola 2pm to 6pm

Learn how to formulate effective collaborative working groups but also negotiate this as an individual, investing yourself within such settings.  Tap into Paul Gazzola’s wealth of knowledge, strong design sensibilities and hands- on approach around how ideas and concepts can be formulated and realised. Allow yourself to achieve outcomes within very practical and efficient means.  Paul Gazzola operates an interdisciplinary practice of over 20 years at the interface of art, architecture, performance and theory in the creation of performances, texts, videos, set designs and multi-media installations for stages, galleries and site specific settings. He has also worked in various dramaturgical and curatorial roles. Since 1988 an extensive body of work has seen presentations and commissions for festivals in Australia, South Africa, South America, Japan, Canada and throughout Europe.

Suzanne is a well-to-do married woman and mother in the south of France. Her idle bourgeois lifestyle gets her down and she decides to go back to work as a physiotherapist. Her husband agrees to fix up a consulting room for her in their backyard. When Suzanne and the man hired to do the building meet, the mutual attraction is sudden and violent. Suzanne decides to give up everything and live this all engulfing passion to the fullest. During this period he also played with The Last Straw, led by John Pochee and Bernie McGann. Jack has also played and recorded with many leading lights of Australian Jazz as well as performing with numerous visiting overseas musicians. In the mid 80's he moved to the far north coast of NSW where he performs with his own trio and others. Around the time of his move, he began working on a vocal repertoire which culminated in 1998 with his Aria nominated CD Sing Some Play Some. The CD included some of Jack's own compositions. He is currently working on a follow-up CD with his trio. Jack is a singing bass-player and you will love his easy and relaxed style, sprinkled with humour. Jack will be accompanied by pianist extraordinaire Steve Russell and the wonderful Dave Sanders on drums. An afternoon not to be missed, it will be lots of fun with fabulous jazz!

Listed by London's National Theatre as one of the most significant plays of the 20th Century, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg is quite simply a modern classic. Written by one of the UK's great living writers, Peter Nichols, this thought provoking and very funny play has been loved by audiences worldwide. Brian (Bri) and Sheila are a young married couple. They care for their daughter, nicknamed "Joe Egg", and are the model of bravery and courage in the face of adversity. Living by the rule that if you don't laugh you'll cry, it's fortunate that Bri is a natural born entertainer. But what lies beneath Bri's funny lounge room antics? We find out when two unwanted guests start to poke their noses where they don't belong. Compelling and heartfelt, the play bubbles along with exuberance, comedy and witty performances. "It's glorious theatre. Without doubt it's a beautifully crafted work, wonderfully staged and directed." Sydney Stage Online "In the world of Bri, Sheila and Joe, fantasy can become reality can become fantastic, with humanity - all its levity and frailty included - the driving force behind it all." Talkin Broadway. Ticket Prices: Adult, $47.00. Concession, $38.00. Under 18, $21.00.

From her many performances of The Burlesque Hour around the globe, to acclaimed Butoh Cabaret DasShoku Hora!!, Yumi Umiumare's electrifying performance style is in demand the world over. In this bold work, premiered at Malthouse Theatre to a sell-out season, Umiumare is set to detonate her extraordinary vision from the international to the other-worldy, as she thrusts us into the twisted corridors of the un-living. At times brutally visceral, the performance is counterbalanced with the purity of digital painting, produced live with her collaborating artists, Bambang Nurcahyadi and Naomi Ota. En Trance extends even further Umiumare's diverse dance vocabulary, plummeting into the cracks where the spirit and the body are propelled into another existence. Umiumare takes us from unsettling moments of physical extremity to magical images of reflective serenity. "A Mystical collision of Butoh and Theatre...En Trance is a wonderfully expressive union of music and text, image and movement, bound together by the irresistible logic of dreams". The Age. Ticket Prices: Adult, $37.00. Concession, $30.00. Under 18, $16.50.

Nimbin is a village that bubbles with creativity. And one of the most stunning expressions of that creativity is the annual Nimbin Fashion Show. Over the years the Nimbin Fashion Show catwalk has hosted fashion events that go way beyond being parades – they’re fashion spectaculars showcasing the region’s cutting edge designs. These shows combine locally created fashion with music and dance to present the product of unfettered local imaginations made real with stitch and seam. Sixteen designers are busy putting the finishing touches on their creations for this year’s fashion showcase at the Nimbin Town Hall on Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14. The runway will explode with designs from Pol with his sleek cuts, Christina Chester with her fashion art, Barbara Mills taking felting to the fore and Jesse’s wear-if-you-dare punked-out streetware...to name but a few.

The show opens Friday night, November 14, at 7.30pm, with a second show on Saturday, November 15, at 2pm. The final show is on Saturday night, November 15, at 7.30pm. (Followed by an after party, of course). Tickets are $15/5 and available at the door or through Perceptio Bookshop on 6689 1766.

The New Year’s Eve Party and the New Year’s Day Recovery Party are held at the Lismore Showgrounds, transformed by hundreds of volunteers to reflect our own unique culture. Visitors can take in the whole experience at on-site camping facilities.

Features of the New Year's Eve party are two large dance spaces with top Australian and International DJs and a more relaxed, dance experience can be found at the alternative Chill Space and at midnight on New Year's Eve there is a spectacular fireworks display.

On New Year's Day you can rejuvenate at our Pool Party held at the conveniently located Lismore Baths, booked exclusively for Tropical Fruits. Then, as the sun sets, head back to the Showgrounds, enjoy a BBQ and chat with the volunteers at the Recovery Party.

We showcase artists, musicians and crafts-people in our Art Show and Cabaret. This year you can also take in some films at the Queer Fruits film Festival, showing in Lismore's Star Court Theatre.
